The 10 Scariest Movies to Watch During Halloween Season

#10. House of 1000 Corpses

Rob Zombie certainly left a mark with this debut, number 10 on this list of scariest movies for Halloween. This movie was sincerely creepy for about seven different reasons. Maybe it is because Rain Wilson ends up sculpted into a fish; or maybe it's because the heroine got it so bad, the poor girl had to be harassed by a guy wearing her dead fathers skin. It also has those scary Manson undertones ("Look how hot these Manson girls were, all killers, all of them!") that just send the shivers.

#9. Nightmare on Elm Street

Ooh, those gruesome knife fingers that Freddy has, or the fact that you can never go to sleep. Anyway you look at it, this is a recipe for disaster for anyone who is or was afraid of the dark. It's also terrible, because urban legend has taught the masses that if you die while you sleep, you will die in real life, making Freddy insanely terrifying. Plus, Johhny Depp gets eaten by the bed and spit out in a spray of blood.

#8. Halloween (the original)

It cold not be a scariest Halloween movies list without listing Halloween itself. It was all downhill from here on out for Jamie Lee Curtis. And truly, will she ever scream like that again? Nah, now she does Activia commercials. Quick fact, John Carpenter wrote the theme song himself. Genius like that doesn't come along many times in a lifetime.

#7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)

What sets this movie apart from other slasher films? The Leatherface's human skin mask, the loud cutting of the chainsaw blades, and the realization that this could really happen. Maybe it doesn't hurt that Leatherface dances his funny little jig. Texas Chainsaw is one of those classics: low budget, but will scare your pants off.

#6. The Ring

How awful, someone gives you a video tape and then tells you that if you watch it, you will die. The Ring, with it's creepy out-of-the-well crawling woman is #6 on this scariest movies for Halloween list. The whole movie itself is dark and creepy and set with a sort of hopeless undertone that makes it beautifully scary in a way.

#5. The Exorcist

Spinning heads. Vile expletives. Buckets of vomit. Sounds like Thanksgiving with the family. Nah, it's Linda Blair in The Exorcists . According to popular cinematic lore, when this puppy first hit the silver screen, people were literally running scared out of the theaters. Now days, we sill call them Sallies, but it doesn't stop The Exorcist from being known as one of the scariest movies to this day. But as approximately 2,000,000 previous "Scariest Movies of All Time" lists have noted, this movie is scary

#4. Poltergeist

It's creepy little Carol Ann and that creepy little short woman. It's the fact that Carol Ann gets abducted through a television set; and anything involving Indian burial grounds is not my cup of tea. Everything about this movie is scary, from the wind hitting the windows to the sad stories of the hex of the Poltergeist crew and cast. This movie is not for watching alone.

#3. Psycho

Movie-gazette says it best, Psycho is the original great horror movie. It’s the ultimate spine-tingler, the definitive creep-show, the perfect chiller. But it’s also much more than that: Psycho is the reason why people these days always lock the bathroom door when taking a shower. Well, that and fear of having someone walk in and see our bodies, that is." Exactly.

#2. It

This movie is by far one of the scariest movies of all time. Even if IT has a weak ending, it still is so scary in the first part with creepy clowns that kill kids in retention ponds and blood that comes out of the shower. This movie goes into the psyche of every little kids biggest fears mixed with the horror of what is out there everyday.

#1. The Shining

The Shining is based off of the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. Rumor has it that Stephen King kept getting lost while trying get back to his room and swears he was in a different dimension. When he finally did get to his room, he sat down and wrote one of the scariest novels of all time. Stanley Kubrik and Jack Nicholas do it proper justice, "Here's Johhny".
